What this test measures
Pitch target
The test finds the note detected most often, calculates its equal-tempered target from the selected A4 reference, and reports the median session offset in cents.
Pitch steadiness
The central 80% spread excludes the highest and lowest tenth of matching samples. It describes ordinary session variation without letting one brief outlier dominate.
Near-target share
This is the percentage of matching samples within ±5 cents of the calculated note target. It measures tuning relative to the reference, not steadiness by itself.
Near-median share
This is the percentage within ±5 cents of your own session median. A steady note can score highly here even when its median is intentionally sharp or flat.
A repeatable test setup
- Choose the same microphone, room, distance, duration, and A4 reference for comparisons.
- Start the test, then sustain one unaccompanied note at a comfortable level.
- Avoid deliberate vibrato if you want to measure straight-tone stability.
- Repeat several trials; do not treat one browser session as a permanent ability score.
Method and privacy
The browser samples the microphone approximately 20 times per second, estimates the strongest repeating period, and converts each detected frequency to cents. Statistics use only samples assigned to the session's most common note.
Audio is analyzed locally and is not uploaded or stored. The copied summary contains calculated numbers only. Room noise, harmonics, device processing, weak attacks, and octave errors can affect any microphone-based pitch estimate.
